The Last Hurrah
The only remaining member of Shandy‘s original crew, which sailed with him on the Old Sea Dog, and now engineering assistant on The Lark. Most of the other crew members have died since their flight into space, and while some are still alive, they jumped ship long ago. Jonathon Smith, however, has remained the whole time, bequeathed to the Captain by his creator, Jonathon Wesley.
Brought to life from mere clay, by kabbalah magics, Smith was Wesley’s servant, protector, and many would say, his best friend. To this day, one of the few things that anyone’s ever heard Smith say out loud, was that he was sad when Wesley died. Ever since then, though, he’s been as dutiful and as hard-working as ever, just for the Captain instead. Of course, the Captain didn’t much like the idea of a personal servant, so he instead offered him the choice between going free, and staying to look after the ship, rather than himself, and Smith readily took the second option.
He’ll be found in the engine section of The Lark, and even if he’s unlikely to say a single word, he’s reliable, somewhat versed in mechanics, and he’s as strong as ever a man was. As allies go, he’s a good one, and he’s proved that over decades of service.
