The Last Hurrah
(Typical English Translation: The Earth-Bound Warriors)
Scandinavian mythology places a premium on warriors. All the great gods are, in some capacity, warrior gods, and those fallen in battle, those fallen with honour and glory, become the Einherjar in Valhalla. There they battle by day and feast by night, in preparation for the final battle, ready to strike back against the monstrous hordes of Ragnarok.
Amongst those fallen heroes, some shine a little brighter in the eyes of the gods. Some seem worthy of carrying their power back into the world of the living, and those chosen few become the Midgardar Einherjar. While some Einherjar have been returned to Midgard in the past to fight giants, they have only been there briefly, and been forbidden to interact with men, but now they are tied once more to the earthly plane, mortals once again, for all intents and purposes.
Not every member of the Midgarder Einherjar comes from the actual Einherjar, some are living mortals who are simply in the right place, at the right time, as with other culture’s protectors of the mundane world. Generally, though, the gods prefer to chose their representatives from those taken by the Valkyries
